Bump Steer

Actually the bump steer is a problem not the feature. Bump Steer occurs when your wheels steer themselves without input from the steering wheel. The unwanted steering is caused by bumps of vehicle’s in the track interacting with improper length or angle of your suspension and steering linkages.

Adjust the Tie-Rod Bracket assembly as required. Repeat the same step as required until the SAFE-T-PLUS unit does not interfere with steering components. Should SAFE-T-PLUS continue to contact steering assembly components.

Step 13: Complete Installation Process

Installation is complete. Now the next step is Road Test and Centering, with proper adjustment if necessary.

ROAD TEST & CENTERING

NOTE:

  • Two people are recommended for the following step. If only one person is available and will perform a road test, be sure to bring painter’s tape to assist with marking the steering wheel for proper alignment.
  • Bring a wrench, specially socket wrench, 9/16-inch socket, and torque wrench for road test.

We can categories Road test and centering in two phases. These phases are explained below.

First Phase: ROAD TEST

Point#01: Always perform road tests by driving vehicles on flat, smooth, straight surfaces far away from traffic. Drive the vehicle without forcing the vehicle to travel straight and note (if any) the direction the vehicle is pulling (left or right). If the vehicle maintains a straight trajectory path, then this is your final step.

Point#02: If the vehicle is pulling in a certain direction, continue to drive the vehicle, but use the steering wheel to hold the vehicle must be in a straight line.

Point#03: Stop the vehicle on a flat surface, far away from traffic, and hold the steering wheel so that the wheels always remain in the straight ahead position.

Point#04: Hold your vehicle in park and apply the emergency brake.

NOTE:

  • 1 person must hold the steering wheel so that the wheels remain in the straight line ahead position, while the second person steps outside the vehicle to adjust the SAFE-T-PLUS unit.

If a next person is not available for help, place a strip/piece of painter’s tape on the top center of the steering wheel, and place a strip/piece on the dashboard above the instrument cluster, directly in line with tape on the steering before exiting your vehicle (Figure Below).

painter's tape on the top center of the steering wheel

  • When loosening Flanged Lock Nuts on  U-Bolts in the following step, allow the SAFE-T-PLUS unit to push the Tie-Rod Bracket assembly along with the Tie-Rod under its own spring loaded pressure. Do not force or hammer the Tie-Rod Bracket into position.

Second Phase: CENTERING

Point#05: For the person outside of the vehicle, gain access to the SAFE-T-PLUS unit. Using a wrench, specially socket wrench with a 9/16-inch socket. And loosen out  Flanged Lock Nuts on Tie-Rod Bracket U-Bolt and allow the SAFE T PLUS unit to freely move to its centered position.

Once the SAFE-T-PLUS unit stays at its centered position, using a torque wrench with a 9/16-inch socket, torque Tie-Rod Bracket Flanged Lock Nuts to 25-35 foot pounds (Figure in point 5 of installation).

Point#06: Repeat road tests until the vehicle is able to maintain a straight trajectory. If balancing and centering the SAFE-T-PLUS unit requires more attempts than 2 or 3 attempts, please contact our technical support from experts.

FAQ’s

What are the symptoms of a bad steering stabilizer?

Symptoms of a bad steering stabilizer is listed below:

  • Vehicle shakes when driving
  • Steering feels loose or wobbly
  • Steering is choppy when driving
  • Steering is unstable off-road
  • Leaking hydraulic fluid under the vehicle
  • Clunking noise under the vehicle
  • Steering wheel shakes at higher speeds

How long do steering stabilizers last?

Ans: There is no exact time frame for steering stabilizer life. You need to replace it as soon as possible, if you observe any one of the symptoms of a bad steering stabilizer as listed in Q1.

How do I know if my power steering pump is failing?

Ans: power steering pump is failing is determined by the following sign

  •  Difficult Turning
  • Squeals, Whines, or High Pitched Noises While Turning
  • The Steering Wheel Vibrates
  • The Appearance of the Power Steering Fluid

Can I drive with a bad power steering pump?

Yes you can drive with a bad power steering pump but it is highly risky for you. Driving your vehicles for extended periods without power steering fluid can damage the pump. While there’s nothing that physically stops you from driving your own vehicles, if your power steering fluid leaks, once the level of fluid drops, your pump runs dry. This increased friction level  and heat level and can quickly cause extensive damage.

Is a dual steering stabilizer better than a single?

Ans: As all we have known that two is better than one. There isn’t really a big difference between the two.  Like the names itself imply a single stabilizer only has one dampener while a dual has two units.  This means that the dual stabilizer dampens the vibrations a little bit more.

If you put heavy duty accessories on your truck like winches or snow plows you would probably benefit from a dual steering stabilizer. Otherwise, Get the single, duals put unnecessary strain on your steering pump and drain your wallet.

What Does a Steering Stabilizer Do?

Ans: If you’ve just lifted your vehicle’s and put some big old tires on it.  Great, right? Well of course it is, until you start to experience the vibrations that sometimes may come with those large tires.  This is the reason the steering stabilizer comes into action.  It can serve one major purpose and that is to minimize these vibrations that are associated with your larger tires.  The steering stabilizer provides improved handling and better vehicle ride quality by dampening the side to side motion of your tires.
